Privacy Notice
PiTime.net is a personal site about distributed computing — the Folding@home team 53269 and related BOINC projects. It is run by Edward Reese in California, USA.
The short version. This site has no accounts, sets no cookies, stores
nothing in your browser, runs no third-party analytics or advertising, and loads nothing from
any other company — no fonts, no scripts, no tracking pixels. It does count its own page
views: each time a page opens, a short record goes to nanoleap.com, a site run by
the same owner, and it includes your IP address, kept for one year
(details below). The only other information it receives from you is
what you choose to type into the contact form, plus the network (IP) address the message was
sent from, and that is emailed rather than stored.
What this site does not do
- No cookies and no browser storage. Nothing is written to your browser, so there is nothing to consent to and nothing to clear.
- No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for.
- No third-party analytics or advertising. No Google Analytics, no tag managers, no ad networks, no cross-site tracking, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing. The page-view counter described below is the site owner's own.
- No third-party requests. Every font, icon and script on this site is
served from pitime.net itself. The one request to another address is the page-view counter
on
nanoleap.com, which belongs to the same owner. No other company learns that you visited.
Page-view counting
When you open a page, your browser sends a short message to nanoleap.com,
which is another site run by the same owner, recording that the page was viewed. This is
first-party counting rather than a third-party analytics product: no advertising company is
involved, and the data is not sold, shared or used for marketing. It sets no cookie and
stores nothing in your browser.
What is recorded for each view:
- which page;
- the date and time;
- your browser's user-agent string;
- the referring page, if your browser sent one;
- the country your address falls in, looked up in a database held on the same server. Your address is not sent to any geolocation service.
- a one-way salted hash of your IP address, so repeat visits can be counted without keeping the address itself.
Your IP address is recorded with each view and kept for one year, then removed from the record along with the browser string. The page, the timestamp and the country remain, so visit counts survive, but the row stops being traceable to you.
These records are not shared. The one exception is legal: where required by law, or in pursuing or responding to a claim about illegal activity. Nothing is sold, rented, given to advertisers, or used to build a profile.
Because the counter is hosted on nanoleap.com and uses the same method there
and on americanhealthact.org, a visit to this site and a visit to one of those can in
principle be recognised as coming from the same source. All three sites belong to the same
person. The data is not combined with anything from anywhere else.
Country lookups use the free IP Geolocation by DB-IP database (CC-BY 4.0), stored and queried locally.
The contact form
If you send a message, the name, email address, subject and message you type are emailed to the site owner so he can read and reply to it, together with the network (IP) address the message was sent from, which helps him spot and block abuse. None of this is written to any database on this site.
To stop automated abuse, the form keeps a short-lived counter of how many messages have come from a given network address in the past hour. That counter stores a one-way hashed form of the address, never the address itself, and each entry is discarded within an hour. It cannot be turned back into a list of visitors.
The message is delivered using Microsoft's email service, which the site owner uses for mail generally. Your message passes through that service in the ordinary course of being delivered.
Team statistics
The figures on the home page come from the public Folding@home statistics API. They are fetched by this server, not by your browser, and cached here for a short time. That is a deliberate choice: it means visiting this page does not reveal your visit or your IP address to Folding@home. Links to Folding@home, BOINC and individual projects are ordinary links — following one takes you to a site with its own privacy practices, which this notice does not cover.
Server logs
Like essentially every website, the web server keeps standard access logs for reliability and security — the page requested, a timestamp, and the requesting address. These are ordinary operational records, are not used to build any profile of you, and are not shared.
Children
This site is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13, or under the minimum age where you live.
Your choices
Beyond a message you chose to send, the site holds only the page-view records described above. If you would like the records for your IP address removed, or have written to the site owner and would like that email deleted, ask and it will be done. Any privacy question can go to the same place.
Changes
If this notice changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it.
